Week 01 - Sylised Concept

This was a happy accident. I was playing around with one of the silhouettes, and just started refining it, and kept a lot of the construction lines. It was also an opportunity to break away from using the pencil tool, and start using the markers, to get a bolder result. The red background really pulled it together....an approach I might explore a bit...

Week 01 - Mouth Study

Just playing with one of the jaws to see how the mouth works when opened...

Week 01 - Head Studies.

Some attempts at realising Trap Jaw's head in profile....I was looking at the design of the some of the Mordor elements from Lord of the Rings, and tried to get some of that jaggedness into the top two jaws....something a bit more than just a bear trap approach, like the bottom two. Kaiser helmets also provided some good ideas...

Week 01 - Trap Jaw

Some quick and very rough silos experimenting with shape, and really trying to exaggerate and off-set that mechanical arm of his....

Villain of the Week......commence!

OK, so I have been toying with this idea for a few months, and it's time to pull my finger out and do something about it. A fair while back, the good folks over at Unit 16 had an activity requiring punters to draw/redesign Masters of the Universe. I started developing some concepts for a few of the bad guys and while I liked the way a few of them were coming along (Trap Jaw and Triclops in particular), I just never got them finished. This wasn't the first time this happened, and I found myself wantinig to complete some of these, as well as just having a go at drawing various other characters.

And so the initial idea for 'Villain of the Week' popped up. I don't know if I will get all of these projects finished, but my aim is simple...draw a different bad guy each week. In some cases I'll have a go at redesigning them, others I will be focusing on my own drawing technique, but all in all, I hope to establish a respectable folder of art that allows me to focus on the drawing rather than the concept, and to begin with, I'm going to finish those pesky Masters drawings that should have been finished months ago for U16.....

First cab off the rank....Trap Jaw. He was re-issued as a pretty cool action figure, but the folks responsible for designing him for the animated series should be shot....honestly, how could you screw up such a cool looking guy and give him such a lame robotic arm....
